E’ il piu’ settentrionale e il piu’ grande dei 4 laghi costieri della regione pontina . Dalle acque salmastre corre,come gli altri parallelo alla costa,da cui e’ diviso dal solito cordone litoraneo. Si allunga infatti per 5 Km di fronte al mare,con un perimetro di circa 11 Km e una larghezza che arriva quasi a 1,5 Km. Per estensione ,coi suoi 4 Kmq e’ il secondo della provincia di Latina e il primo di quelli pontini,ma viceversa e’ uno dei piu’ bassi in assoluto ,raggiungendo una profondita’ massima di 2 metri. Noto in passato per avere rive assai incerte e un regime irregolare,e’ ora stato regolato e sistemato. Ha per immissario il fosso della Cicerchia,ma nei mesi estivi riceve acqua anche dall’Astura. Sul lato sud-est si trova l’abitato del piccolo centro di Fogliano che da’ il nome al lago.
Cosa vedere
Poco distante a nord sul promontorio anonimo e’ interessantissimo raggiungere lo spettacolare Castello di Torre Astura,posto in una posizione unica ,che rappresenta in assoluto una dei piu’ bei luoghi della costa del Lazio Meridionale.
Come arrivarci
Da Roma si raggiunge l’abitato di Nettuno e poi si prosegue in direzione verso Latina ed il Parco Nazionale del Circeo , seguendo la via litoranea fino a Lido di Capo Portiere ; sulla sinistra si troveranno le prime propaggini del lago dalla forma molto regolare. Sul lato meridionale ,alla foce del Rio Marino la strada litoranea si interrompe e piega bruscamente verso l’interno in direzione di B.go Grappa,segnando anche quello che e’ il confine meridionale del lago di Fogliano ,distante poche centinaia di metri da quello dei Monaci.
The lake
It's the northern and the 'largest of the four coastal lakes of the Pontine region. Brackish water runs, like other parallel to the coast, from which 'divided by the usual coastal strip. In fact it stretches for 5 km on the sea front, with a perimeter of about 11 km and a width that reaches almost 1.5 Km. By extension, with its 4 square kilometers and 'the second of the province of Latina and the first ones pontine, but vice versa, and 'one of the most' low in absolute terms, reaching a depth 'maximum of 2 meters. Known in the past to have banks very uncertain and irregular regime, 'now it has been adjusted and fixed. He has for the ditch tributary of Cicerchia, but in the summer months also receives water dall'Astura. On the southeast side there is the village of the small town of Fogliano that 'the name to the lake.
What to see
Not far to the north on the headland and anonymous 'interesting achieve the spectacular Torre Astura Castle, situated in a unique location, which is by far one of the most' beautiful places in the southern Lazio coast.
How to get
From Rome you reach the town of Neptune, and then continue in the direction of Latin America and the Circeo National Park, following the coastal road to Lido di Capo Porter; on the left you will find the foothills of the lake from form very smooth. On the southern side, at the mouth of the Rio Marino the coastal road ends and bends sharply inward toward B.go Grappa, scoring what is' the southern border of Lake Fogliano, a few hundred meters from the Monks.
