Si trova nella conca di Amatrice a circa 868 metri s.l.m.e come i laghi del Salto e del Turano e’ un bacino artificiale,ricavato nel 1924 con lo sbarramento dell’omonimo torrente ,affluente del Tronto,tramite una diga. La sua forma allungata si snoda tra le basse colline che lo circondano per quasi 3 Km,con un perimetro complessivo di quasi 11 Km: Occupa una superficie di 0,8 Kmq e raggiunge la profondita’ di 40 metri. Alla sua forma sinuosa fanno da cornice i monti della Laga innevati per gran parte dell’anno e che dividono il loro territorio tra Lazio,Abruzzo e Marche dove , tra vette che raggiungono quasi i 2500 metri vivono ancora animali mitici per l’Appennino come il lupo e l’orso. La zona dopo la seconda guerra subi’ un massiccio processo di emigrazione verso i grandi centri pedemontani.

Innanzi tutto Amatrice , citta’ medievale veramente affascinante da cui si possono poi organizzare tours del Parco della Laga.

Da Roma seguire la SS4 Salaria in direzione Rieti e poi continuare in direzione Ascoli Piceno , la segnaletica e’ ottima e il paesaggio affascinante.

Its elongated shape winds through the low hills that surround it for almost 3 Km, with a total perimeter of almost 11 Km: It occupies an area of ??0.8 sq km and reaches a depth 'of 40 meters. To its sinuous shape framed by the snow-covered mountains of Laga most of the year and divide their territory between Lazio, Abruzzo and Marche, where, among the peaks that reach almost 2,500 meters still live mythical animals to the Apennines as the wolf and the bear. The area after the second war suffered 'a massive emigration process towards large piedmont centers.
