Lacus Cutiliae
Questo piccolo laghetto di origine carsica noto fin dall’antichita’ col nome di Cutiliae lacus era ritenuto a ragione l’omelico d’Italia ( ombilicus Italiae ). Si trova nella Piana di S. Vittorino,a 430 mt. s.l.m.,sulla via Salaria vicino a Rieti,tra Cittaducale ed Antrodoco. Insieme ad altri 2 laghetti piu’ piccoli,il Pozzo di Mezzo e il Pozzo di Burino,costituisce un sistema molto interessante e rappresentativo. Nelle sue vicinanze sorgeva la citta’ sabellica di Cutilia di cui i molti resti sono ancora visibili. In passato ha assunto anche altri nomi quali "Pozzo di Rutignano" o di "Latignano". E’ di dimensioni contenute,appena 190 metri di lunghezza per 150 di larghezza ,viceversa ha una profondita’ notevole oscillante tra i 37 ed i 54 metri. Questo e’ dovuto al fatto che il lago e’ stato originato da una dolina,cie’ una cavita’ superficiale dovuta a fenomeni carsici ed e’ alimentato da un emissario sotterraneo. E’ dominato da un imponente rudere romano conosciuto come "Palazzo di Vespasiano",risalente al I sec. a.C. ed ora oggetto di restauri.
Cosa vedere
A parte la bella e panoramica passeggiata alle rovine sovrastanti e la vicinanza di Rieti sono da segnalare le cittadine di Antrodoco e Cittaducale , splendidi borghi medievali tra i piu’ belli della penisola. Dopo Antrodoco in direzione L’Aquila la suggestiva chiesa della Madonna delle Grotte a testimonianza di un’apparizione secentesca merita una visita ( e’ aperta la domenica ).

Da Roma seguire la SS4 Salaria in direzione Rieti e poi proseguire verso Antrodoco , il lago si trova sulla sinistra poco dopo le Terme di Cotilia.

From Rome follow the SS4 Salaria towards Rieti, then continue towards Antrodoco, the lake is located on the left just after the Baths of Cotilia.
